The famous “Money Pit” at Oak Island has sucked treasure hunters from all over the world in from 1795 on. Discovered by Daniel McGinnis while walking through the woods, initially was a curious depression in the ground. McGinnis came back with some friends and began to dig. Around 10 feet down, they found a flagstone covered floor. Thinking they had found some pirate’s treasure trove, worked on the pit for the next dew years.

Realizing they couldn’t continue with the work, they left the island and returned a few years later with help of the Onslow Company to press the dig. About 90 feet down they found a stone inscribed with odd markings. The stone has since been lost, as well as most hope of recovering any other treasure the pit might hold. The dig hit an ingenious booby trap that flooded the Pit, and stymied most other examinations into the site.

Over the years, a number of digs have gone on at the Pit. Rumors float around every few years of something else that have been dredged from the Pit, but most cannot be confirmed. Even the original stone pulled from the Pit has been lost since the mid 1800’s.

The site has attracted a number of theories as to whom and why it was constructed. The prevalent theories include that the pit was in fact a pirate’s booty stash. Another says that the Pit holds the wealth of the Templars who fled to North America after Black Friday in 1307. Today the island is privately owned and supposedly the Pit is being worked once more.

There’s a mathematical ratio commonly found in nature—the ratio of 1 to 1.618—that has many names. Most often we call it the Golden Section, Golden Ratio, or Golden Mean, but it’s also occasionally referred to as the Golden Number, Divine Proportion, Golden Proportion, Fibonacci Number, and Phi.

You’ll usually find the golden ratio depicted as a single large rectangle formed by a square and another rectangle. What’s unique about this is that you can repeat the sequence infinitely and perfectly within each section.

Hoax or history? On November 8, 1898, a Swedish immigrant farmer, Olof Ohman, and his ten-year-old son say they found a Scandinavian runestone, dated 1362, wedged in the roots of a tree in rural Minnesota.
